Autobiography of a Face by Lucy Grealy - Books Library.
Lucy Grealy's ruthless self-examination, rich fantasy life, and great derring-do inform this powerful memoir about the premium we put on beauty and on a woman's face in particular. It took Lucy twenty years of living with a distorted self-image and more than thirty reconstructive procedures before she could come to terms with her appearance after childhood surgery left her jaw disfigured.

Book Summary 'Despite its unblinking stare at an excruciatingly painful subject, this is not a dour book. Autobiography of a Face is a book about image, about the tyranny of the image of a beautiful - or even pleasingly average - face. In the end, this tyranny is not so much overthrown as shrugged off.'.
Although Lucy Grealy’s title Autobiography of a Face suggests an emphasis on her physical transformation in response to cancer, I believe that her novel feels more like an Autobiography of a Soul.As a child, she was d iagnosed with Ewing’s sarcoma; for her, cancer of the jaw bone. But rather than focus on merely the corporeality of her cancer, she expresses its indirect, internal invasion.
