Welcome to Archaeology at the University of Exeter. Archaeology at Exeter is an exciting and varied subject combining fascinating academic study with practical, hands-on experience. You can study a diverse range of topics from human evolution, or the emergence of classical civilisations, to the creation of today’s landscapes.
The part-time D.Phil by Research (full title: Doctor of Philosophy, equivalent to PhD) is assessed by a 80,000 word thesis, and was first offered in Archaeology in 2003. Students normally study for six years (twice the full-time length).
Our PhD Archaeology programme will see you undertake substantial original research leading to a thesis that constitutes a genuine contribution to archaeological knowledge. You can undertake your PhD as either a full-time or part-time programme.
The Anthony Wilkin Fund is devoted to the encouragement of research in Ethnology and Archaeology. The completed online application form must be submiteed no later than 31st May. Letters of reference (two for the Studentship, one for grants) should be submitted at the same time (uploaded to the application form).
